CODEBITS 2009

30 12 2009

codebits_2009

Codebits 2009 was an amazing event bringing creative people and technology all together in a relaxed and friendly environment. In short, it was “3 days. 24 hours a day. 600 attendees. Talks. Workshops. Lots of food and beverages. 24 hour programming/hacking competition. Quizz Show. Rock Band Contest. Lots of gaming consoles. More food. More beverages. More coding. Sleeping areas. More fun. An unforgettable experience.

I was invited to give a presentation on Physical Computing. Part of my work at Inmotion is to promote open hardware and to assist users helping them to be creative trough technology. I tough it was about time to present the work done in Portugal and gathered most of it in a two-hour presentation. Unfortunalty i didn’t sleep the night before and my voice dragged a little bit.

But Codebits was much more then Physical Computing :) There were sessions on Mobile Development with Android, Web 2.0, Loockpicking, Game Design, Creative Robotics, Multitouch Applications just to name a few topics. Check the photos in Flickr or Sapo Fotos.

I sure wish to be there in 2010!!!

Untitled* by Joana Fernandes Gomes

29 05 2009

Untitled* is the work of Joana Fernandes Gomes, developed at the Music Tecnology Group (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) and at CITAR (Universidade Católica Portuguesa). Based on a Tangible User Interface, this work is a geometric generative system that is controlled by the movement on the surface. Each object displays different functionality. Some produce forms and other act like tools to shape a form.

There are three kind of tools: barrier, magnet and eraser. Using movement a user can interact with generative visuals. Check the Photos & Video. Try it this weekend 30 of May at Fundação de Serralves

Coração do Mundo by Joana Campos Silva

4 05 2009

Coração do Mundo is a project by Joana Campos Silva, for the Master degree in Sound and Image at the UCP. The project is an installation/performance that expands the presence of a physical body into the virtual/real world by allowing real-time visualisation of her heart beat.

During a month Joana will be streaming all the emotions and sensations into Patchube. At the same time a physical installation in Lisbon is controlled by Joana’s heartbeat. Each beat will change the light hue, opening a window to visualise her emotions trough colour changes.

We have collaborated with Joana’s in the system design and implementation. Her work expose the benefits of today wireless technology and biometric monitoring systems, by allowing the development of new applications in domains where mobility is a concern.

The public exhibition will take place at “Sala de Coro” UCP,  during the 7 and 8 of May at 21:30PM.

New Arduino Duemilanove, now with Atmega328

9 03 2009

Tired of smashing your code into tiny bits? Your sketch refuses to upload because it’s to large? Then we have the perfect solution for you. The new Arduino Duemilanove now ships with the Atmega328 which features twice the amount of memory. That’s 32 Kb of Flash and 2Kb of RAM memory to play with. As a bonus, this versions also uses a faster baud rate to upload your code!!! Don’t forget to update the Arduino IDE to the latest version.

Blink@La Salle, Barcelona sponsored by Inmotion

27 01 2009

The multimedia project Blink is a performance born in the context of the Máster en Creación y Diseño Multimedia at  ‘La Salle’ (Universitat Ramon Llull, Barcelona). Created by João Sousa Lopes, the project attracted several synergies that resulted in a multidisciplinary work team. Blink is an interactive performance, where the dancer movement and position results in real-time audio, video and light control.

Here @ Inmotion, we are celebrating the birth of this project. Has sponsors, it demanded many hours in skype, personal meetings, phone support, sleepless nights and NO Christmas vacation!!! Now it’s time to stop browsing the web, leave your comfortable sofa and head on to the theater ’Teatro Estudi Victor Hernando’ at 16pm on 31 January, 2009 to see Blink in action. See you soon..
